The weather,
Maybe the Dutch are used to the winds here, but I don’t think they are. It gets so windy that everything is blown over, trees shakes, and I bike at a 50% slower rate. It’s kind of cool though, if you are inside, because it feels like a hurricane every time it gets windy, which is not so uncommon. Granted I’m not from the south or other places in America that experience real hurricanes, but compared to New York, being in Holland can feel like a hurricane every time its windy.
The rain is also nice, because it’s so unbiased. Everyone is affected, and the rain doesn’t care who it dumps on, it just dumps. So when it rains, I know that everyone is feeling it, and I’m sure of that. Not that I want everyone to feel misery, but there’s some kind of closure in taking part in a very communal feeling. Other feelings, I can’t say the same of, because I feel some stupid feelings so much more due to my oversensitivity, but the rain is tangible and real and shameless.

Today is Sinterklaas day, which is the Dutch Christmas, and above is a picture of Sinterklaas walking around in our neighborhood. He seems a bit out of place, and the weather is kind of a bummer, I imagine that lots of people will be home being snug and cozy eating big meals with their families. Imagining it is so sweet, it doesn’t really make me feel homesick so much as excited for when I will celebrate in that way in the future.
